Then installed vcrun 2008, changed back to Win XP mode, disabled the steam in-game thingie, disabled gameoverlayrenderer with regedit, use windowed mode (without border) in virtual desktop, and now I have been able to complete a few test chambers (got one achievement too)! First tried Windows 7 mode, and I was able to play a few minutes more before the crash. I have been having a bit more success today.
