In Alex Garland’s Annihilation (an adaptation of the first novel in Jeff Vandermeer’s Southern Reach trilogy), four women enter a strange, shimmery forest and come face to face with various weird plants. In film, killer greenery has been going through a bit of a renaissance. From the carnivorous Venus flytrap to the bleeding tooth fungus, from plants that smell like rotting corpses to one's that trap prey and dissolve them with digestive fluids, it’s an unknown, often dangerous world, and one that overlaps closely with our own.
The vegetal realm is entirely inaccessible to us, its behaviour strange and habitats dark. We ourselves aren’t vegetable, and differences so often motivate our deepest fears. I see my suspicion of all things green and floral as a natural, even instinctual thing. If you want to beat enemies to a pulp, this is the item for you.Ever since I witnessed a little red-and-blue plumber-man tumble into the gnashing jaws of a Piranha Plant, I knew vegetables weren’t to be trusted. This weapon feels rudimentary and primitive and I like that. The weapon design reminds me of the Hulk Gloves that were popular a few years ago. Basically a hunk of dragon bone that has been shaped into some sort of glove. Basically just a cartwheel, but with spikes.ĭragon Bone Fist comes in at number 6 on the list. I love the design and the absurdity of this item. The Bonewheel Shield is just one example. To clarify, basically if you see something (on a person or enemy) you can get it. This is one aspect of the Dark Souls series I love, items are organically present within the world. Basically the enemies that wield the BS instantly turn sonic level speed, crashing into the player and shredding health.
For anyone that has never played the game… This item sucks and here is why. The first and only shield to be found on this list is the Bonewheel Shield. Not much more to say about this weapon, so let’s keep things rolling. Couple the design with an auxiliary skill that stacks toxic on enemies and you have my number 8. I especially love the barbs on the blades edge. The design reminds me a bit of the tail of a stingray. Aside from having being a wicked blade, the dagger looks good. From the Artorias of the Abyss DLC, the Dark Silver Tracer is the games highest dexterity and critical hit damage dagger.
